The Bourbon Journey: From a Forgotten Island to the Alchemy of DUSE

Edition: DUSE | Varietal: Pink Bourbon | Elevation: 5,645 Feet (ASL) | Process: Honey | Roast: Medium

There are stories that take centuries to fully reveal themselves. Holding a cup of truly extraordinary coffee is holding the living legacy of an epic passage—one that began in the ancient forests of Ethiopia, crossed the desert ports of Yemen, traversed the Indian Ocean, and bloomed against all odds high in the Colombian Andes.

In the early 18th century, a handful of prized Arabica seedlings sailed from the historic port of Mocha to the remote Île Bourbon (now Réunion). Shielded in near-mystical isolation for over a hundred years, these plants developed a natural sweetness and aromatic finesse that would redefine coffee history. Over time, the varietal journeyed to Latin America. Yet, as a delicate, low-yielding tree, modern agriculture gradually replaced it with commercial crops, transforming true heirloom Bourbon genetics into a collector’s treasure.

It was in the high-altitude cloud forests of Colombia that this lineage took an unexpected turn. High in the Andes, coffee growers discovered trees yielding cherries of an uncommonly silky, blushing pink hue. Intuitively named Pink Bourbon, modern genetic science would later uncover its true secret: far from a simple hybrid, it is a rare heirloom landrace of Ethiopian origin that found in Colombian soil its ultimate terroir—concentrating extraordinary sugar density and delicate floral aromatics.

Yet the true value of this micro-lot lies beyond its rare aesthetic. It resides within the cherry itself—and its ability to yield an infinitely sweet, complex, and nuanced cup when cultivated with uncompromised precision. Luxury coffee is never defined by scarcity alone; it is born when every choice—altitude, soil composition, selective hand-harvesting, and meticulous processing—preserves something truly exceptional.

At 923 Coffee, we honor this relentless pursuit with our signature release: DUSE. Cultivated at an exacting elevation of 5,645 feet above sea level, this Colombian Pink Bourbon matures slowly through cool mountain nights and crisp alpine sun.

To elevate its intrinsic sweetness, DUSE undergoes an artisanal Honey process, allowing the fruit’s natural mucilage to cradle the bean during sun-drying. Masterfully brought to a medium roast, the result is a silky, pristine cup unveiling notes of raw wild honey, ripe red berries, and a subtle, luminous citrus finish.

Perhaps that is why it feels so natural for this story to begin with a voyage. Because excellence is a journey that never truly stops.
